Council gets cash boost to help house homeless

By Neil Speight 19th Sep 2020

THURROCK Council has been allocated £75,000 by the government to help it extend support for vulnerable homeless people who have been given temporary accommodation during the coronavirus pandemic.

The funding will help the council provide interim accommodation to people who were housed during the pandemic and offer ongoing support including helping them find their own homes in the private rented sector, securing accommodation such as supported housing, and accessing wider support to help them rebuild their lives. It will also help keep residents safe during the winter months.

Cllr Barry Johnson, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: "I would like to thank the government for this funding. It will ensure that vulnerable people and rough sleepers continue to have safe accommodation. No one should have to face this pandemic on the streets and we will continue to work hard to ensure everyone in Thurrock has access to accommodation and the care and support they need.

"We want everyone in the borough to experience good quality living conditions and will continue to work with the government, private landlords, developers and housing associations to make sure our residents have access to good homes."

Housing charity Shelter has offered advice to people who may have been or face being made homeless. You can read it here.
