Council gives ground on 'caretaker-to-cleaner' pay dispute and extends consultation period
By Nub News Reporter 24th Apr 2026
THURROCK Council employees appear to have won the first stage of their battle to avoid pay cuts as part of a cost-cutting departmental reorganisation.
As reported on Thurrock Nub News, members of the GMB union have been in negotiation and consultation with the council since the plans for environmental services, and in particular changes to the caretaker service at local housing developments and homes, were presented to staff in February.
Earlier this month workers spoke up to highlight their unhappiness with the proposals, with some workers set to suffer cuts of up to £2,000.
Now Nub News has been told by the GMB that the consultation period has been extended to 31 May and the council is now considering introducing the 'caretaker-to-cleaner changes' as a pilot, during which time the caretakers would retain their current pay and conditions
GMB senior organiser Gavin Davies said: "The caretakers provide a essential role for the local community and residents.
"We are pleased that Thurrock Council has recognised the potential impact of the proposed changes on our members and residents and is considering trialling the plans without any changes to our members' pay and conditions.
"GMB will continue to work constructively with the council to secure the best possible outcome for our members and make sure they are consulted throughout this process."
Thurrock Council was asked to comment earlier this week but, to date, has declined to respond.
