A SURVEY has been launched to review the benefits and disadvantages of the resident permit parking zones that exist at various locations across Thurrock, particularly close to rail stations.

A major change to the permit policy was implemented by the council as a fundraising measure earlier this year when residents were asked to pay £15 per permit (they are allowed up to three) to park on roads near their homes.

Previously the first two were free and the third cost £75.

There was considerable concern and a degree of resentment when the change was put in place as part of the review of fees and charges proposed by the council's ruling conservative group and voted through by a narrow majority in March.

That concern has continued with many resdients across the borough remaining upset.

One area partoicularly affected by the permit system is Stanford-le-Hope, where there are three separate parking zones.

At a recent public meeting organised by Stanford West ward councillor Neil Speight, and also addressed by fellow ward councillor Terry Piccolo, that concern was widely expressed.

Residents were annoyed at the charge,m but also the operation of the plan in the town, which offered little felxibility for parking and penalised residents with a permit who could no use it in other zones when they visited the town centre.

Cllr Terry Piccolo addresses the recent open meeting in Stanford-le-Hope.

Some people wanted the scheme scrapped altogether, others wished the charges to be removed and others wanted the zones to be merged.

Cllrs Speight and Piccolo said they would call on the council to consult with residents following the chnage and the matter was raised.

Now the council has designed and launched a survey to engage with residents who have a valid parking permit within the various parking permit areas.

It says: "We would like to hear your views on the permit schemes that have been introduced in your area.

"Capturing your views will allow us to collate vital data that will help us understand the positives, but also the negatives of such parking areas, which will further assist in our processes for future permit areas.

"You will need your permit reference number to complete the survey.
