THURROCK Council's ruling Labour group says it has earmarked £100,000 of council funds to help vulnerable residents, especially pensioners, stay warm and supported this winter.

The council has introduced its 'Pensioner Winter Support Fund' an initiative it says targets pensioners who no longer qualify for winter fuel payments, but might need some help with upcoming fuel bills

Council leader Cllr John Kent says: "We have identified at least £100,000 to support Thurrock pensioners who need it most this winter. We are working closely with council officers to make sure there is a simple and effective process for residents to access help when they need it."

In tandem, the 'Thurrock Cares' campaign - which is a collaborative effort involving the council, the voluntary and community sector, and local volunteers - will offer resources and guidance to support residents.

A statement says the campaign offers a central online hub and printed guides, roadshows in partnership with local voluntary groups and targeted outreach across the borough.

Portfolio holder for resources, Cllr Sara Muldowney, added: "Thurrock's toxic Tory debt prevents us from doing as much as we would like, but this campaign shows we are committed to action. We're working hard to ensure residents get the help they need. Many pensioners could receive a £3,900 boost through Pension Credit, but too many are missing out."
