THURROCK Council has countered reports it has removed free parking bays in Grays and says it is still offering support to local shops and businesses during the pre-Christmas period by encouraging car users to visit the town.

Last week social media was rife with negative comments about the council's town centre parking following release of news that is once again offering free parking on Saturdays.

And it was alleged that the council has actually decreased the number of spaces that are available to park in the area.

There was also speculation about the council's involvement in the operation of the Grays Shopping Centre multi-story car park, which has recently changed its pricing structure to a minimum of a pound a visit.

In response Cllr Ben Maney, cabinet member for Highways and Transport, told Thurrock Nub News today (Tuesday, 1 December): "There are some free 30 minute bays on Bridge Road by Grove Road, and some free four hour bays on Bridge Road by Grays Park, all in Grays.

"There are no free parking bays directly in Grays town centre, which is subject to parking restrictions in the form of a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ). This has been in place for more than 10 years.

"For December, we are pleased to again offer free parking in our council-owned car parks and pay and display on-street parking every Saturday to support high-street shops and local businesses during the festive season.

"Thurrock Council does not own, manage or receive any monies or revenue from Grays Shopping Centre multi-storey car park."

Details on the CPZ can be found gere.
