MORE Thurrock residents are seeking support to quit smoking, with referrals to Thurrock Council's Healthy Lifestyle Stop Smoking Service increasing by 21% compared with the same period last year.

Between 1 April and 31 May 2026, the service received 232 referrals, demonstrating growing demand for support from residents looking to improve their health and wellbeing by quitting smoking.

Of those referred, 47% have already set a quit date with the support of the service.

The increase follows recent awareness-raising activity highlighting the impact of smoking on both health and finances. This included local media coverage and a feature on BBC Essex discussing the support available to residents who want to quit smoking.

Cllr Rob Willoughby, cabinet member for Adults, Health and Housing Services, said: "It is encouraging to see more residents taking the positive step of seeking support to quit smoking. The increase in referrals shows that people across Thurrock are recognising the benefits of stopping smoking and accessing the help available.

"Quitting smoking is one of the best things people can do for their health, reducing the risk of serious illnesses and improving overall wellbeing. Our Healthy Lifestyle Stop Smoking Service provides free, personalised support to help residents quit successfully, and I would encourage anyone who is thinking about stopping smoking to get in touch and take that first step."

Stopping smoking is one of the most effective ways to improve health, reduce the risk of serious illnesses and save money. Residents who access specialist support are significantly more likely to quit successfully than those who attempt to stop smoking without help.

Thurrock Council's Healthy Lifestyle Stop Smoking Service offers free personalised support, tailored quit plans and practical advice to help residents stop smoking for good.

The council has also seen growing engagement with digital support, with around 100 downloads of the Smokefree app recorded so far this financial year.

Anyone who wants to quit smoking can access free support through Thurrock Council's Healthy Lifestyle Stop Smoking Service.
