Council says it has no plans to develop allotments site and residents' concern is unfounded

By Neil Speight 31st Jul 2020

THURROCK Council and one of its most senior councillors have given an unequivocal assurance to Stanford-le-Hope residents their allotment plots are safe.

Rumours have surfaced recently on social media that plans are in place to sell off and develop the allotment site off Billet Lane.

However, that is not the case says the council.

Thurrock Nub News asked is there was any truth in residents' concerns and was told any statement that the site would be developed is 'entirely incorrect'.

And the council added: "The council does not have any intention whatsoever to either sell or develop housing on this site.

"Billet Lane Allotments is held by the council and it has been designated under Queen Elizabeth II Fields Trust which protects the space for recreational use only."

Cllr Mark Coxshall, Cabinet member for regeneration, said: "There is absolutely no possibility that we would allow housing to be built on this allotment site.

"It is used and maintained by local residents and is an important asset that provides crucial recreational ground for the benefit of our communities.

"Unfortunately many of the stories we see on social media have no basis or fact and we would urge residents to engage with us first to clarify the truth."
