THURROCK Council has announced that brown bins will be collected on a one-off basis in the week beginning Monday, 5 June.

The council will then focus household waste collections on general waste and recycling because of issues it is facing with waste crew staffing numbers.

Please do not put garden waste in your brown bin after the collection in the first week of June. No brown bin collections will take place until further notice following this.

Recycling collections will be paused for one week to allow the brown bin collections to take place in the week beginning Monday 5 June. Blue bin collections will resume from Monday 12 June.

There has been no formal decision about the future of the garden waste service. Any decision will be made through the council's democratic governance processes.

Cllr Andrew Jefferies

Cllr Andrew Jefferies, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "I wanted to make sure that residents brown bins were emptied before we paused this service while councillors consider future options.

"We are unable to effectively collect three streams of household waste and we have chosen to focus on weekly general waste and recycling collections.

"This means that these collections take place as scheduled and any reported issues around missed bins are now robustly investigated and swiftly resolved.

"A paper examining options for the future of the household waste collection service will be brought to Members for a decision."

Garden waste that cannot be composted at home should be taken to the Household Waste and Recycling Centre for disposal.

Garden waste cannot be processed as part of general waste or recycling which means green, grey or blue bins containing garden waste will not be collected.

More Information about what goes in wheelie bins can be found on the council's website at: thurrock.gov.uk/bins.

The most effective way to report issues with missed bins is through the council's website at: thurrock.gov.uk/missed-bin-collection/missed-bins.
