Council seeks residents' views on new strategy for transport

By Nub News Reporter   4th Dec 2025

THURROCK residents are being asked to contribute their views on how the borough's transport strategy should be reshaped.

The borough council is creating the strategy which it believes will guide future investment, improve travel choices, and support sustainable growth from 2026 through to 2040 and beyond.

The council says: "Our current strategy dates back to 2013. Thurrock is changing – with new homes, jobs, and infrastructure - and we need a modern, inclusive and sustainable transport system that supports growth, improves health, and protects our environment.

The new transport strategy sets out our vision for a connected, inclusive, and low-carbon transport network and aims to:

  • Improve travel options for everyone
  • Reduce emissions and improve air quality
  • Support economic growth and regeneration
  • Make streets safer and more people-friendly
  • Promote walking, cycling, and public transport
  • Ensure our transport network is resilient and well-maintained.

To make sure our strategy works well we need to:

  • Base our decisions on good data – so we know what's needed and what works.
  • Join things up – making sure our plans support national priorities like cutting carbon emissions, boosting the economy, improving the environment, creating more homes and helping people live healthier lives. We also ensure our plans support and influence local priorities, such as those in our Local Development Plan.
  • Work with our neighbours – so our plans align with those of nearby councils and the wider regional strategy from Transport East.
  • Think ahead – planning for transport needs now and in the future.
  • Be ready for change – including any future changes in how local powers are managed in Essex.
  • Be supported – by a range of new policies and related plans e.g. rail and freight strategy

"We're asking residents, businesses, and stakeholders to help shape the future of transport in Thurrock. Your feedback will guide our goals, policies and future proposals that shape how we travel in the years ahead.

"We're seeking your views on:

  • Our Goals – Do our goals reflect what matters most to you?
  • Our Policies – Are they right for Thurrock's future?
  • Major Schemes – What do you think of the proposed transport projects?

"The consultation is open to anyone who lives, works, visits, or has a business interest in Thurrock.

"You do not need to read the full strategy to take part, but you can download the full draft strategy here:

The consultation closes on Sunday, 1 February.
