RESIDENTS in Aveley have mocked Thurrock Council for a number of blunders in new signage it has mounted in the village centre.

Villagers have pointed out a number of errors including describing Aveley as a town, when the residents and most locals are proud of its continued formal identification as a village.

And they have ridiculed a historic picture included in the signage – which is actually from neighbouring South Ockendon. Other errors about place names and locality have been identified.

After the errors were brought to the attention of the council by local ward councillors and members of the village's community forum, residents have been told the mistakes will be corrected, the signage replaced with a description of Aveley as a village and the Ockendon picture will be removed.
