THURROK Council's trading standards team has sent out a warning to residents, saying there has been an increase in 'rogue traders' operating in the borough, particularly touting for business to fix roofs.
The council says: "We have recently had an increase in rogue traders carrying out roofing work in the area. The problem with roofing work is that consumers are unable to check for themselves the condition of their roof, or the quality of work because they can't easily get onto their roof.
"If you're unsure how to spot a rogue trader, a good sign is that they will knock at your door to tell you they have noticed some work needs to be carried out on your roof urgently. This can make you feel pressured into having the work done, as they may make you feel that your roof is unsafe otherwise.
"Advances in modern technology have enabled rogue traders to contact consumers in other ways, such as using intermediary websites to generate work. As these sites invite consumers to post jobs, with the traders encouraged to quote for the work, any contact after appears to be a genuine approach from the trader.
"So, how do you know if the trader you have is going to treat you fairly and do a good job? Here's a few tips that will help you to spot the signs of a rogue trader:
"They'll impress upon you that the work is urgent and will be able to start straight away They'll be reluctant to supply you with any paperwork, such as a written quotation and contract. They'll prefer to be paid in full, upfront, either in cash or in some cases by bank transfer
"They may have minimal or no online presence and a lack of reviews or references can be a warning sign."
The council adds: "If you are looking for any work to be carried out to your home:
- Try to use someone recommended to you and inspect previous work carried out
- Get at least three quotes from different traders, to give you a good idea of a reasonable cost for your project before signing a contract
- Find a trader through the Buy With Confidence scheme. These businesses have been approved by a Trading Standards team and their conduct must be of an acceptable standard to participate in the scheme
- A genuine trader will be happy to supply you with a free of charge quotation, and will provide you with a 14 day cooling off period before any work starts, so as to comply with consumer law. They should not ask for payment in full up front for work and will provide you with receipts.
