Councillors' allowances to drop - by £2 a year!

THURROCK councillors will continue to receive an allowance of £9,200 a year for their basic duties, with members who take on special responsibilities getting paid additional amounts depending on their role.

Council leader Rob Gledhill, for example, will be paid a total of £41,400 a year while a cabinet member gets £21,700.

This week's meeting of the full council will hear a report from a panel set up to look at allowances which says they should remain at their current level, though they have rounded the Thurrock allowance from £9,202 by two pounds to create parity with neighbouring Southend Council.

The special responsibility allowances, received on top of the basic allowance, are:

Leader £32,200

Deputy Leader £16,560

Other Cabinet Members £11,500

Mayor £13,800

Deputy Mayor £3,220

Leader of Largest Opposition Group

£9,200 Deputy Leader of Largest Opposition Group – where Group has at least 17 Members £2,300

Leader Other Opposition Groups – where Group has at least four Members £2,300

Chairs of Scrutiny £6,900

Chair of Licensing £5,520

Vice Chair of Licensing £5,060

Chair of Planning £9,200

Vice Chair of Planning £2,300

Vice chair of scrutiny £460
