THE borough's MP and deputy mayor were on hand to open a new garden and support facility designed for dementia sufferers in Thurrock.

Cllr James Halden and MP Jackie-Doyle-Price shared the ribbon-cutting duties at Thurrock Community Hospital on Long Lane yesterday (Friday, 9 July) when the Alzheimer's memory garden was opened.

The garden is to be a place of quiet reflection for people to sit in and volunteers will be there to offer tea and coffee to those who visit on Fridays.

It is hoped those who visit the garden will make new friends and there will be supportive activities for those who do attend, including craft sessions.

Representatives of the Alzheimer's Society included Anne Powell, Sylvia Smith, Laura Cleverley and Liz Turrell, who said: "We would like to thank Cllr Halden and Ms Doyle-PPrice for being there to open up the garden. Thanks also to Little Lodge Nursery in Fobbing and Smith's Garden Centre for their very generous donation of plants. It was a great day."
