A net gain: Free programme gives opportunity to make more of borough parks

RESIDENTS of all ages and abilities are being encouraged to get active, try something new and meet new people through free weekly tennis sessions taking place in Thurrock's parks.

The Barclays Free Park Tennis programme offers welcoming, beginner-friendly sessions that are completely free to attend, making it easier than ever for residents to enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of being active outdoors.

Free sessions are already taking place every Saturday at Blackshots Park in Grays, with a second location at Koala Park in Tilbury launching today (Saturday, 19 September).

The sessions are open to everyone, whether they are picking up a racket for the first time, returning to the sport after a break, or looking for a fun way to stay active with friends and family. Equipment, including rackets and tennis balls, is provided free of charge, removing barriers for anyone wanting to give tennis a try.

Participants can sign up by creating a free account through the LTA Play online booking system and registering for their chosen session.

Council leader Cllr Richard Bingley says making the most of local parks is important.

Thurrock Council leader Cllr Richard Bingley, said: "Making the most of our parks and open spaces not only plays an important role in restoring civic pride across our borough, but also helps residents stay active, healthy and connected. These free tennis sessions are a fantastic way to encourage more people to enjoy our parks.

"Whether you're looking to learn a new skill, get moving more often, spend time with family and friends, or meet new people in your community, I would encourage residents to sign up and give it a go. With coaching support and equipment provided, there's never been a better time to pick up a racket and get involved."
