Far East heroes remembered at annual borough service

By Nub News Reporter   17th Aug 2025

THE Fallen and those who served in the Far East campaigns in the Second World War were remembered at a service in Thurrock.

The annual Victory in Japan (VJ) Memorial Service of Remembrance took place at the Burma Star Association Memorial Rose Garden, Wingfield Drive, Orsett, to mark the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Japan Day, marking the surrender of Japanese forces on 15 August 1945, which ended the conflict.

Local service organisations were represented.

On Saturday (16 August) veterans from across the services, including representatives of the Far East Veterans Association and the Royal British Legion, attended the service led by Orsett Vicar Rev Sue Mann.

It is likely to be her last service at the garden, as she is soon to leave the parish.

Mayor Cllr Sue Shinnick spoke at the service.

Also in attendance was borough mayor, Cllr Sue Shinnick, who spoke at the service and laid a wreath on behalf of the borough. Council leader Cllr Lynn Worrall also attended along with other civic dignitaries at a service organised by Natalie Smith MBE, Head of Community Development at Thurrock Council
