Crews tackled a hay fire through the early hours

FIREFIGHTERS have spent the night dealing with a fire affecting hay barrels in Marshfoot Road, Chadwell St Mary.

Firefighters have been working with the farmer to break up the stack and extinguish the fire. 

The alarm, was raised at 1.35am this morning (Saturday, 24 June). Crews from Grays and Canvey Island tackled the blaze.

Firefighters remained in site throughout Saturday  to monitor and extinguish hotspots within the fire. 

At 5.30pm they issued the following statement: "Crews have been working with the farmer to break the stack up and extinguish the fire. 

"The stack is now burning under a controlled burn with the farmer and crews will keep an eye on the scene to make sure it is safe."
