Firefighters battling blazes on all fronts in and around Thurrock

THE skyline of Thurrock was shrouded in smoke this evening (Saturday, 13 August) as several large field fires sent dark clouds rising into the hot evening air - and below them teams of firefighters battled a serioes of big blazes.

To the south east of the borough a large cloud was rising in Kent and driftiong over the Thames, to the west another huge plume dominated the skyline in the wake of two previous big lazes in Rainham and Romford yesterday - and in Thurrock, just hours after tackling a big blaze in Tilbury, crews were deployed in fields between Stanford-le-Hope and Linford to tackle another rural conflagration.

A 200 metre square area of land was affected with firefighters working hard in difficult terrain to stop the spread of the fire.

Station manager Dan Kirk said: "It was a challenging area to access but once again our firefighters worked incredibly hard and contained the fire. They did a great job."

Earlier this afternoon teams tackled a fire that started in field close to allotment and land just to the north of Amazon Fulfuilment Centre in Tilbury. The falmes spread across fields to the north towards Chadwell St Mary across the Marshfoot plain.

Crews of firefighters evetually doused the flames and brought the incident to a conclusion, but within an hour or so were tackling about big blaze on Buckingham Hill Road.

The landfill site to the west of the Linford household waste tip caight light around 5pm, and a significant number of teams of firefighters, supported by bowsers that were require to bring water to the rural site, were drafted in to tackle the blaze.

By 7pm at least ten crews were engaged in the fight, but the flames appeared to be under control.
