FIREFIGHTERS tackled a blaze in the east of the borough where a number of buses were on fire.

36 vehicles are reported to have been destroyed.

The fire was at Jacksons Yard between Chadwell St Mary and Linford.

A huge plume of smoke has risen from the site, where a number of buses belonging to the Ensign Bus Company are stored.

A statement from Essex Fire and Rescue Service says: "Firefighters were called to a fire involving a number of double decker buses at a bus storage yard in Chadwell St Mary this evening.

"When fire crews arrived they reported that the fire was quickly spreading among the buses.

Firefighters worked hard to get the fire under control, and by 9pm were able to reduce the number of crews at the scene to just two who will remain at the scene to extinguish hot spots and ensure the scene is left safe.

"The fire has destroyed approximately 36 buses."

"An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire."
