Forever Young are placed on the Mayoral Roll of Honour

By Nub News Reporter   24th Nov 2025

THE work of a community group based at a Thurrock pub have been honoured by the borough's first citizen who has presented them with a certificate marking their nomination to the Mayor's Roll of Honour.

The group, known as 'Forever Young' were welcomed to the town Hall to by mayor Sue Shinnick to recognise their work supporting isolated and vulnerable residents across Thurrock.

The award reflects the groups ongoing commitment to the community through volunteering and working to help combat loneliness, offering companionship and fundraising for free meals.

The driving force behind the group is landlady Sam Foster of the Ship Inn in Little Thurrock who summed up the moment simply: "Well, it's not every day you're invited for coffee and biscuits in the Mayor's office.

"Forever Young is truly grateful for the award, and on I'd like to thank everyone, and our volunteers who help every week."

The mayor's citation read: "By offering regular contact, companionship, and practical help, they provide a lifeline to people who have little day-to-day support, strengthening the sense of community across the borough."

Sam and members of the group were welcomed by Deputy Mayor Cllr Steve Liddiard, who formally recognised the group's ongoing work supporting isolated and vulnerable residents across Thurrock.

It was a fitting tribute to a year of laughter, friendship, and quiet dedication that has brought people together in the heart of Little Thurrock.

What began as a simple idea has grown into a much-loved weekly gathering. Every Monday, whatever the weather, the doors of The Ship Pub open to welcome local residents for conversation, games, and shared lunches in good company. It is warm, relaxed, and inclusive — a place where everyone feels part of something special.

In a community with few local amenities, Forever Young has filled an important gap. For many, it is far more than just an afternoon out — it's a lifeline of connection, friendship, and belonging. Groups like this play a vital role in easing loneliness and strengthening community ties, offering consistency and care to those who might otherwise spend their days alone.

None of this would be possible without the tireless dedication of the volunteers who make it happen week after week. Sam and colleagues Davina, Jan, Martin, and Billy give their time freely, ensuring every detail is thoughtfully arranged — from the games and raffles to the lunches and dinners that everyone looks forward to. Their kindness and commitment are the heart of Forever Young.

As Jeanette Mitchell shared: "I went for the first time last November, walking in very nervously. I was soon put at ease as I was asked to join one of the tables and was soon chatting to the friendly people sitting there. I look forward to Mondays — it's such good fun, and I've made many friends. Such a brilliant idea, Davina and Sam, and thank you to everyone involved xx."

And Pauline Muggeridge, one of the original members, added: "I was one of the original members, and I've watched it grow. I walked in alone and was made to feel so welcome. I look forward to Monday afternoons and have made some really good friends. A huge thank you to those who give their time to help run this — we've said we don't know what we'd do if it ever stopped! xx."

Their words capture everything Forever Young represents — friendship, belonging, and the enduring power of community spirit.
