FAMILY and friends of a Tilbury 'legend' who passed away recently came together in a town park today to pay tribute to him.

Local community stalwart Charlie Lawrence died at St Luke's Hospice on Saturday, 3 January. His funeral will take place at Corbets Tey tomorrow (Monday, 26 January) at 3.30pm followed by a gathering at Tilbury FC's clubhouse at Chadfields.

Over many years Charlie was the driving force behind youth football in Tilbury - also taking troubled youngsters under his wing. He was recognised on the Thurrock Mayor's roll of honour for his commitment to the town.

As a lot of young people will not be able to attend the funeral as they will be in school, a balloon release was arranged for this afternoon at the town's Daisy Field park - where Charlie spent years working with local young people.

Tilbury councillor and former mayor Cllr Steve Liddiard paid tribute to Charlie, reading a message from his family and friends and, later, a poem.

Long-time friend and graduate of the youth set-up run by Charlie, Aaron Mulqueen, also paid an emotional tribute, as did family friend Emma Mcauliffe.
