A WELL known Stanford-le-Hope pub is set for a refresh after Thurrock Council officers approved plans for to upgrade the Grade II listed Inn on the Green.

The works include the removal of ivy from parts of the building, repainting of its exterior, upgrades to outdoor seating areas and a series of internal alterations aimed at modernising the pub without affecting the historic structure.

Externally, the plans allow for the clearing of climbing vegetation from the front and side walls, though greenery below the pub's signage will remain.

New timber shelters will be installed in the rear, built with posts and lightweight larch shingle roofs, along with festoon lighting and planters to improve the outdoor customer space.

The pergola roof will also be replaced, while previously painted areas of the building will be redecorated.

Inside, only non historic fabric will be altered, including removing the illuminated dancefloor and a modern dropped ceiling to reveal original beams.

Additional works include new flooring, joinery, bar fittings and updates to customer toilet areas. Council officers stressed that the listed building's historic structure will remain untouched.

The pub, which fronts directly onto The Green and stands close to the Grade I listed St Margaret's Church, dates back to the early 19th century. Its significance is tied to its age, traditional sash windows, timber framing and prominent position within the historic core of the town.

Thurrock Council's heritage advisor raised no objections, noting that amended plans specifying timber shingles and painted finishes for the shelters were appropriate to the setting.

Officers concluded the proposals would preserve the building's special architectural and historic interest and would not harm its character or appearance.

No public objections were received during consultation.

The council granted listed building consent subject to conditions, including a requirement for trial vegetation removal areas on the brickwork to safeguard the historic façade.

The decision supports the continued viable use of the long established pub, which has evolved over decades through extensions and refurbishments dating back to the 1970s.It is considered that the proposal would preserve the special architectural and historic interest of the Grade II listed building.
