IN the face of a significantly rising number of infections in the borough, the leader of Thurrock Council has reiterated his call to residents to adhere to government advice and do everything to stall the passing on of coronavirus.

In his regular address to residents Cllr Rob Gledhill says 'managing the risk' is critical.

Cllr Gledhill, who has courted his own controversy over reportedly not adhering to the rules last year, said: "Thank you to everyone who exercised caution and followed advice and guidance to celebrate Christmas safely this year. Being careful and managing the risk is key to keeping our loved ones safe and supporting the NHS.

"As the numbers of people testing positive in Thurrock continue to rise it is crucial that we do not lose momentum as we approach New Year. We have now recorded over 2,000 cases per 100,000 compared to 1,346 cases per 100,000 just last week.

"This places us among the 15 upper tier local authorities with the highest rates. There are huge increases across the whole of the country so we must all continue to play our part to protect our family, friends and local communities here in Thurrock.

"The best way you can do this is by making sure you get fully vaccinated, even if you have had COVID-19 in the past. The vaccines, plus booster, reduce the chance that you will get infected and significantly help prevent you from becoming seriously ill as a result of COVID-19.

"Remember to also test regularly, meet people outside or in well-ventilated places, wear a face covering where required and self-isolate if you test positive.

"I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year, take care and celebrate safely."
