A series of incidents at the Dartford Crossing in both directions has brought gridlock to Thurrock's roads this morning.

Traffic across the borough was at a standstill with many people unable to get to work, school or leisure destinations.

Police and highways authorities report of incidents on both sides of the crossing which led to delays on major routes and as they backed up, spread across many minor routes, with many towns including Grays almost at a standstill.

Essex Police reported it was "dealing with concerns for the welfare of a man" at the crossing at around 6am.

National Highways reported this morning the crossing was closed due to an ongoing police incident, and at one point was warning motorists there was "no estimated time of resolution".

However, an update posted at 10.12am reported emergency services were in the process of reopening the bridge.

There is no indication of how long the surrounding road network will be impacted for.

But National Highways has reported a three-hour delay on the M25 clockwise.
