A MAN has admitted charges connected to the discovery of the remains of 37 dogs at his property after an investigation by Essex Police left him with no choice but plead guilty.

Oaveed Rahman, 26, of Hope Road, Crays Hill, appeared at Basildon Crown Court today (Monday, 12 January) and admitted 11 counts of fraud by false representation and one count of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. The one count of causing suffering incorporates behaviour to 21 dogs and a cat.

Dog owners from Thurrock and Basildon are mong those whose pets died or whose whereabouts remain undiscovered.

A police statement says: "We began an investigation in May last year when officers, working alongside colleagues- from the RSPCA and Basildon Council, responded to reports relating to an address in Crays Hill.

Through the investigation a thorough search of the property and grounds was carried about and the remains of 37 dead dogs were found, and a number of live dogs were seized.

Inspector Steve Parry added: "I know this investigation, and the issues it revolves around, has caused a significant amount of concern within our local communities.

"We understand the strong feelings of the local community, and people from further afield, who want answers.

"Rahman's treatment of the dogs in his care was abhorrent and he defrauded members of his own community into giving him money to look after them.

"More information will be heard when Rahman is sentenced next month.

"My team's investigation has left Oaveed Rahman with no option but to admit the offences against him.

"He has been on remand since his arrest and now faces a real prospect of a prison sentence.

"I would like to thank everyone who has shared vital information. Your help has been invaluable and has enabled us to build this case and, ultimately, secure this conviction."

Rahman is due to be sentenced on 20 February.

The case against Greta Csikos, 25, of Sinclair Road, Chingford, has been discontinued as a result of Rahman's guilty plea.
