MANAGERS of a Thurrock pub which has been at the centre of controversy and debate over recent weeks have defended their actions in the face of local criticism.

The Bull pub on Dock Road in Little Thurrock found itself at the epicentre of local attention earlier this year after a violent brawl on the fringe of its premises.

That was followed by other incidents and an appearance before Thurrock Council's licensing committee when its licence was in jeopardy. The pub survived the test to its credentials, though new restrictions were imposed.

Managers of the venue have now said they had already introduced tougher security measures before councillors approved new licensing conditions following concerns raised by residents and police.

General manager and designated premises supervisor Ahmed Elsayed said the business had already begun strengthening its operations before the review process concluded.

"We did not wait for the review to conclude before taking action," he said.

"A number of additional measures and operating procedures had already been introduced by the business before and during the review process.

"We worked constructively with Thurrock Council and the relevant authorities, and we also asked for a number of those measures to be formally incorporated into the premises licence. They now form part of our updated licence."

Mr Elsayed said the changes include enhanced security, mandatory ID checks and scanning, tighter controls on entry and re-entry, expanded CCTV coverage and increased management oversight.

He said the venue's focus was on rebuilding confidence and reinforcing its role as a family-friendly pub and restaurant.

"Our focus has been on building customer confidence, improving the overall experience and ensuring people see The Bull for what it is, a local pub and restaurant where people can enjoy food, drinks, Sunday lunch, functions and family occasions," he said.

Looking ahead, Mr Elsayed said the business would continue investing in staff training, security and operational procedures, while expanding its food offer, community events and family entertainment programme.

"We want to continue building a positive relationship with our neighbours and the wider community and to be recognised as a responsible local business," he added.
