THURROCK Council has recognised the contribution of the Merchant Navy by raising the Red Ensign flag outside the Civic Offices, Grays, today.
The private event (on Thursday, 3 September saw the Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Terry Piccolo, raise the flag and read a speech from HRH the Earl of Wessex recognising those who served throughout the First and Second World Wars.
Cllr Piccolo said: "It is important that we commemorate the Merchant Navy and their incredible sacrifice by honouring the men and women who lost their lives in service. Raising the Red Ensign today signifies our commitment to remembering their strength and bravery for their people and their country."
Cllr Deborah Huelin, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: "Although we are unable to come together as a community to mark this day, we hope everyone is able to pay their respects in their own special way and reflect on the outstanding contribution our Merchant Navy has made throughout history."
