A THURROCK hospital ward for older patients has been transformed to improve the quality of life for patients living with dementia, thanks to the fundraising efforts of staff and donations from local charities and organisations.

Meadowview ward at Thurrock Community Hospital is run by Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (EPUT) and provides care for older people living with dementia and other mental illness.

A hallway has been transformed into a dementia bus stop, a specially designed feature that recreates the appearance of a traditional bus stop, providing patients with a familiar and comforting place to sit. This setting allows staff to engage gently with patients, especially if they are anxious, and encourage meaningful interaction.

The lounge has been transformed into a warm and welcoming café, where patients can enjoy refreshments, socialise, and experience the comfort and familiarity of meeting friends for tea.

Another area of the lounge has been transformed into a post office corner, designed to evoke cherished memories of writing and positing letters, encouraging reminiscence and stimulating conversation.

The project cost £7,400 and fundraising efforts have included fetes, a Christmas market, raffles and competitions.

Ward clerk Karina Gittleson, Housekeeper Kelly Polley, and Activity Coordinator Tracy Hart, have been leading the fundraising.

Karina said: "Last year we accompanied our local Rotary Club on one of their Santa Sleigh parades, where we raised more than £500 by walking the streets of South Ockendon one cold December night, knocking on doors and shaking our collection buckets."

Local charities and businesses which have supported their fundraising efforts include The Rotary Club of Grays, The Rotary Club of Mardyke Valley, The Crosse Keys Community Fund, K&B Design, and 3Way Cleaning.

Charities and businesses who contributed to the work were invited to the ward's recent summer garden party event to get a first look at the renovation works.

Also present at the garden party were Borough mayor Cllr Bill Cook, Cllr Bill Mumford, councillor for Stifford Ward where the hospital is situated and Cllr Robert Willoughby, cabinet member for Adults, Health and Housing.

Cllr Cook said: "Living with dementia can be challenging, both for those affected and for their loved ones. Creating environments that provide familiarity, comfort, and reassurance can make a real difference to people's daily lives.

"The themed areas, including the bus stop, tea room, and post office, are wonderful examples of thoughtful design that help patients feel safe, valued, and connected to memories and experiences that are meaningful to them.

"What makes this project particularly special is that it has been driven by the generosity of the local community. The fundraising efforts of staff, donations received from the patient's families, together with the support of charities, volunteers, and local organisations, demonstrate the very best of Thurrock."

The party featured refreshments and patients enjoyed live entertainment provided by singers Geri and Elvis, who sang a variety of songs.
