MP mirrors concern over Grays branch closure and says bank that got bail-out from public purse should remember its obligations
By Nub News Reporter 6th Mar 2026
THURROCK MP Jen Craft has offered her support to businesses and residents who have asked NatWest to rethink its plans to close its branch in High Street, Grays.
An appeal for a change of heart was featured on Thurrock Nub News recently when businessman James Mackinlay said closure would be a hammer blow to the town and local people.
Mrs Craft has echoes those concerns, saying: "As a Grays resident, I know the loss of NatWest will have big impact on our High Dtreet.
"Aside from the obvious point that in-person banking is relied on by many people, this particular branch is busy and drives footfall to the town centre.
"It's also a local employer, with a responsibility to the staff who work at the site.
"It is extremely disappointing that NatWest's management doesn't appear to have considered the wider social and economic impact of their decision, or their duty to the communities they serve, particularly given the company received a significant payout from the public purse in 2008.
"I have written to NatWest asking them to think again, and to the Banking Minister to understand what help is available.
"I am keen to hear from staff, residents, and local businesses about the impact this will have, so I will be launching a survey shortly.
"I am determined to work with all interested parties to make sure that people in Grays continue to have access to in-person banking services."
