INVESTIGATIVE and recovery work remains ongoing after emergency services attended a multi-vehicle collision on the westbound carriageway of the A13 between the North Stifford interchange and the M25 which left at least two people seriously injured.

A statement from Essex Fire and Rescue Service said: " "Firefighters were called to a road traffic collision on the A13 at the Stifford Interchange.

"On arrival, crews reported that two heavy goods vehicles and a car had been in a collision and a man was trapped in his vehicle.

"Firefighters worked to rescue the man by 7:56am and he was left in the care of the Ambulance Service."

Adjacent roads have been gridlocked as large tailbacks have been created on the A13, stretching back to Stanford-le-Hope. The A13 westbound was closed and for safety reasons the outside lane eastbound was also closed.

There are significant queues on alternative roads through Grays.

An eyewitness who passed the scene said: "There was a driver trapped in a car. It looked really bad. I just hope they survived."

A police statement says: "We are currently at the scene of a serious collision on the A13 just before the M25 junction.

"We were called following reports of a collision between a lorry and a car this morning, Monday 12 October, at around 6.45am.

"We have currently closed the road and traffic is being diverted from the carriageway on the A1012.

"At least two people are thought to be seriously injured and we remain at the scene.

"We would like to thank motorists for their patience and understanding while we deal with this incident."

Highways England have issued a message on social media: "If travelling in Essex this morning, please be aware all lanes are currently blocked A13 westbound between Intu Lakeside and M25 J30.

"There are approximately 3.5 miles of congestion on the approach to the incident which is expected to add at least 30 minutes onto usual travel times. Plan ahead.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the route if possible, or allow plenty of extra time for the journey."

Updates to follow.
