Nepalese community celebrates unveiling of monument and memorial for Gurkhas

THERE was a large turn-out this morning (Sunday, 18 August) at Purfleet-on-Thames Heritage and Military centre, wtih civic dignitaries and community represenatives in force.

As well as sharing cultural messages, the event was offered a ervice of remembrance and wreath-laying for thos members of the armed forces who lost their lives, particularly in far eastern campaigns but also in the battlefields of Europe in conflicts around the globe.

Local organistations including the Thurrock bikers motorcycle group, Thurroc Scooterists and representatives of military service groups also attended.

The introduction was given by the president of Thurrock Nepalese and Gurkha Community Mr Man Bahadur Rai. Prayers were said by members of the various religious groups repreented across the local nepalese community, several of who served in Gurkha regiments.

Borough Mayor Cllr Kairen Raper was among those who laid wreaths and she also spoke at the event.
