THURROCK'S recently-appointed new police chief has delivered a Christmas message to the borough.

District Commander Leanne Archer, who has replaced Chief Inspector Anthony Atkin, says: "Thank you to everyone in Thurrock who has supported us this year — volunteers, shops, schools, and neighbours across our towns and villages. Your tips, time, and kindness make a real difference.

"This year our teams worked closely with Trading Standards and the Met Police to stop stolen tools being sold at a local boot sale. Several people were arrested, and over £50,000 worth of tools were recovered. We also held tool marking events with local businesses to help stop thefts.

"We've seen encouraging results over the last 12 months.

"Overall crime in Thurrock is down compared to last year, and thefts from vehicles have fallen too. Anti‑social behaviour reports are lower, and we're continuing to focus on prevention — simple steps like good lighting, locking up, and marking property really help keep this progress going.

"We've stepped up work with shops and business groups in Grays and Lakeside, focusing on repeat locations and known offenders.

"That partnership has encouraged more reporting, which gives us a clearer picture and helps us put the right people in the right places. Our rural team has managed unauthorised encampments and responded to hare coursing reports, while neighbourhood officers increased visible patrols and community meetings.

"Looking back, I'm proud of the teamwork across our district. Looking ahead, my aim is simple: more visibility in our town centres and rural areas, faster help when you need us, and even closer working with local partners to prevent crime before it happens.

"Please have a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year. Thank you, Thurrock, for everything you do to help keep our area safe."
