New website highlights growing concern over freight rail traffic

By Nub News Reporter 1st Aug 2025

A THURROCK councillor has launched a website to highlight concerns over rail freight traffic through the village he represents.

Cllr Fraser Massey, who represents East Tilbury, has created the 'Stuck at the Gates' portal so villagers can build up a database about the impact two increasingly busy rail crossings have on their lives.

Access to the village can only be made via roads to the north and south, both of which have crossings.

During the day the rail traffic is mostly c2c commuter trains but, increasingly - and particularly through evenings, nights and early morning - long container trains going to and from London Gateway port and logistics park are causing long delays.

And, says Cllr Massey, it is about to get a lot worse.

He says: "DP World are expecting to have more freight before 2026.

"I have today (Friday, 1 August) launched an online campaign page so we can register how much hassle and harm the extended closure times for the train gates cause due to freight trains.

"It is the first step in getting the right partners to the table to seek a long term solution for a problem which is about to get a lot worse."

The site can be accessed via this link.
