RESIDENTS across the region are being asked their views about how health service communications can be improved.

The focus is on digital communication but NHS Essex recognises some people have difficulty with digital messaging.

Essex residents have already told NHS Essex that digital tools such as the NHS App can be helpful, but not everyone is able to access – or likes – digital options.

Now residents are being invited to complete a short anonymous survey that will delve into the detail of what digital tools currently work well for them, what doesn't, and how these can be developed to improve people's access to and experience of services.

Rachel Hazeldene, Chief Clinical Information Officer, said: "We have been listening to people's feedback about how health and care services can be improved across the county. Digital access featured highly in this.

"While many people's experiences are positive, for some people digital-only services can make it harder to get the support they need. People want simple and accessible digital services, support for people who are less confident using technology, and that a face-to-face or telephone conversation is essential for those who cannot easily access online services.

"By completing our survey, Essex residents can help us design how we develop the digital future of health and care in the county."

Feedback from residents has shown that the NHS App and online booking systems for appointments and ordering prescriptions work well for many people. They can help them access services and get the information they need to manage their health.

But there were concerns about whether digital services or digital access were creating a barrier to people getting care and support, including:

  • difficulty using some digital platforms
  • too many different platforms leading to confusion about which to use
  • the need to help people use digital services independently and confidently.

NHS Essex is keen to hear feedback from people from a wide range of backgrounds – from those who enjoy the conveniences of using digital services and are confident using technology to manage their health and care, and those who are not. The wide range of perspectives and experiences will help ensure the health and care digital strategy for Essex reflects what works for people and makes improvements to what does not.

Rachel added: "We would really encourage people to complete this short survey and share their views. This is about how they access health and care in the future and we can't do that without understanding what this means for people."
