Update: Six arrests - Oil terminals in Thurrock part of nationwide action by protesters

By Neil Speight 2nd Apr 2022

ENVIRONMENT protesters have targeted an oil terminal in West Thurrock this morning (Friday, 1 April) climbing on top of storage tanks. They have also targetted two other sites within the borough.

Police have reported that six people have been arrested in the initial stages of the protests.

The Thurrock action is one of ten co-ordinated protests being mounted across the country today.

The group, calling itself Juststopoil attracted recent publicity when members tied themselves to goalposts at Premier League football matches.

A young spokesperson called Zak, spoke to Nub News at Oliver Road this morning, where police have blocked access to the Navigator terminal while they deal with the protest.

The protest is causing minor disruption to traffic in the area with delays in some people getting to work. Police are letting people through after they have shown identification.

A statement from Esex Police says: "We are currently dealing with three incidents in Thurrock, where a group of people are reportedly blocking the roads.

"We were called to the Navigator Fuel Distribution Centre at 3.50am this morning. A call followed soon afterwards, alerting us to a similar situation in Askew Farm Lane.

"Our officers are also now responding to reports from a depot on London Road in Purfleet. Six people have been arrested so far.

"Our officers are currently working to resolve the situation quickly and safely and nearby roads may remain closed as a part of this.

"We are urging any drivers to avoid the area and plan their journey accordingly.

"We appreciate your patience and understanding."

Just Stop Oil said in a statement: "The Just Stop Oil coalition is demanding an end to the government's genocidal policy of expanding UK oil and gas production and is calling on all those outraged at the prospect of climate collapse and suffering from the cost-of-living crisis to stand with us.

"Ordinary people can no longer afford oil and gas, it's time to just stop oil."
