Play centre could become permanent home for church

A FORMER Kids R Us play centre in Ockendon could be transformed into a church.

The Lighthouse Church has submitted an application for change of use to turn a vacant children's play centre in Arisdale Avenue, South Ockenden, into a place of worship.

In their application, church leaders said the Lighthouse Church is a "vibrant and inclusive community focused church established in 2019, who are committed to serving the local area through faith-based activities, social outreach, and community support."

The church said it "provides a welcoming space for worship, pastoral care, and charitable initiatives, positively impacting individuals and families across Thurrock."

If approved, the site will enable the Lighthouse church to establish a permanent base. Currently, the church gathers on Sundays at the Vue Cinema at Lakeside and holds midweek activities at the Thurrock Hotel.

The church said: "The lack of a dedicated venue presents operational challenges and limits the church's ability to expand its support services. Securing a permanent home will allow the Lighthouse Church to consolidate its activities, enhance community engagement, and provide a consistent and accessible space for worship, youth programs, and outreach initiatives.

"The industrial unit represents an ideal location for the Lighthouse Church. Positioned appropriately away from sensitive noise receptors, it minimises any potential noise or disruption while ensuring an appropriate environment for worship and gatherings."

It added: "Additionally, the unit benefits from good transport links and parking provision, making it easily accessible for congregation members and visitors.

"Repurposing this underutilised space will not only provide a vital community facility but also contribute to the area's vibrancy and positive use of industrial land."

Historically, the building has more recently been occupied for commercial purposes, with its most recent use being as a children's amusement centre and day centre operated by Kids R Us.
