ESSEX Police have joined the condemnations of the destruction of tributes to fallen soldiers at a Thurrock memorial site and appointed an officer dedicated to investigating the crime.
And Thurrock Council has also expressed its formal disapproval.
Thurrock Nub News broke the story of the vandalism yesterday and visited the site to broadcast a video report and to tell of an appeal that has been launched to replace the damaged figures of 'Tommys'.
Today Essex Police issued the following statement: "We are appealing for information after statues recognising fallen war heroes were damaged in Purfleet.
"We received reports that Tommy silhouettes were vandalised at Purfleet Garrison Community Centre, off Centurion Way, between 8pm on Friday 29 May and 10am on Saturday 30 May.
A number of statues were ripped from their stands and others were broken." And Chief Inspector Natalia Ross added: "The statues were put in place to commemorate those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. "They were enjoyed by the community and centre visitors who wanted to pay their respects.
