DETECTIVES investigating an assault in Chadwell St Mary want to identify two women who they believe can help their investigation of an incident that is being treated as racially motivated.
It happened near the centre of Chadwell, close to the library and community hub, the Marisco Hall and the Tesco store and petrol station on Brentwood Road.
The police statement says: "A man reported that he was assaulted by a group of men and one woman in Marisco Close shortly after 9.30pm, on Friday, 10 July.
"The man, in his 40s, sustained a broken jaw and remains in hospital.
"We are treating this as a racially aggravated assault after it was reported that immediately prior to the assault, he was racially verbally abused.
"We want to identify and talk to two women who were not part of the group who assaulted the man but were reported to have witnessed the incident and may have recorded it taking place.
"We are carrying out extensive enquiries in the area, including house-to-house visits to speak to anyone who may be able to help.
Thurrock's District Commander Danny Barnes said: "This is a very serious assault and is completely unacceptable.
"We have launched an investigation to identify those involved.
"Everyone has the right to feel safe in their community and no one should be subjected to violence or abuse, whether verbally or physically.
"We are particularly keen to hear from two women who may have witnessed the incident or have footage which could assist our investigation. Even the smallest piece of information could prove vital.
"We understand that incidents of this nature can cause concern within our communities and we are working closely with local partners and community representatives to provide reassurance and maintain confidence whilst the investigation continues.
"I would urge anyone who witnessed the incident, has information or footage, to speak to us, quoting incident 592 of 11 July."
