THE latest fundraising event for a Thurrock teenager who is making the best of his life despite being stricken by a debilitating condition takes place this weekend.

A quiz afternoon will be hosted at Stifford Clays Club, Grays, to support the The Ellis Appeal which supports 14-year-old Ellis Lynch and his family.

Last year a local fundraising campaign raised enough to send Ellis and his family on a two week trip to Disney in America, which they will enjoy to celebrate his birthday next month.

His mum, Leesa, says: "We still have some fundraising to do before we go but we almost have enough. We are eternally grateful for all your love and support and kindness. Ellis is soooooo excited."

Ellis, who is known for his bright and cheerful personality, sense of humour, hilarious stories and amazing smile. lives with Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy, a life-threatening disorder with no cure.

Ellis was diagnosed when he was just two-years-old, after Leesa became concerned he wasn't hitting the usual developmental stages of weight-baring, crawling or pulling himself up. The illness has continued to affect his ability to move and Ellis is now unable to use his arms or legs and relies on the help of others to do most things.

While physically Ellis is unable to do anything for himself   he hasn't let it hold him back.

Since joining secondary school, Leesa said Ellis has really "come out of his shell", making new friends and taking part in school productions.

The reality of his condition never leaves Leesa's mind and she said: "Every time we go to Great Ormond Street Hospital which has cared for him over the years it is like a big reality shock," she said.

But, for the moment, Leesa and Ellis have a great holiday to look forward to and Leesa has spoken of her gratitude to the local community that has given them such constant support, continuing with this weekend's event.
