SOCIAL housing flats run by Thurrock Council can now benefit from a new recycling service implemented by the authority.

Following a programme that began in September more than 2,000 households in blocks of flats across Thurrock now have access to recycling facilities. 222 new recycling Eurobins or wheeled bins were rolled out in 47 high-rise and low-rise blocks across the borough, including South Ockendon, Grays, Purfleet, Corringham and Tilbury.

Residents in these blocks also received recycling packs, including advice and guidance and a new recycling waste bag to help them sort recycling from general waste.

Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Aaron Watkins, said: "I am delighted that the first phase of this programme to help our residents to recycle has finished on time within six weeks – despite initial delays for the project caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

"We have heard some great feedback about the new bins, and are delighted that our residents are working towards boosting recycling within Thurrock.

"Recycling is so important for us and for the environment. We all have a part to play in it and this scheme will help. Although phase one is coming to an end, in early 2021 phase two and onwards will begin to ensure all residential blocks have improved recycling capabilities."

A total of 2,305 households in council-managed properties have benefited so far from this project which has been ongoing over the past two years.

The second phase of the initiative, focusing on recycling facilities for private flats, is intended to start in early 2021, with a tailored scheme commencing afterwards for flats above shops or other commercial premises.
