A PRESENTATION evening to celebrate the young people who completed The Respect Project was held at the Seabrooke Rise Community House in Grays.

The project, run by Essex Boys & Girls Clubs, culminated in a week-long expedition to Wales which made the young people leave their comfort zones and achieve more than they ever thought possible.

The awards were presented by Keith Cranmer, Project Leader for the EBGC, Cllr Martin Kerin, councillor for Grays Riverside and a representative from the Jack Petchey Foundation. As well as the young people themselves, awards were also given to volunteers Anita Donovan and Gavin Lee, and to representatives of the Gateway Academy and Ormiston Park.

Speaking after the event, Cllr Kerin said: "It was an honour to present these awards and to hear the stories the young people told about their time away in Wales. They really were forced out of their comfort zone and made to achieve what many of them initially thought was impossible.

"It was particularly pleasing for myself to hear how Ellie, a young volunteer at the Seabrooke Community House, has grown in confidence. Credit to Anita, Gavin and all the volunteers at the Community House for their sterling work."

Volunteer Anita Donovan said: "I have been going to Wales and the Lake District with young people for more years than I care to remember. It is always a wonderful experience helping the young people to grow in confidence and try new things. 

"The Essex Boys and Girls Clubs provide so many wonderful opportunities, and we are grateful to them and to the Jack Petchey Foundation for their generosity. I look forward to working with Keith Cranmer on the next adventure!"
