PURFLEET-on-Thames Community Forum continues to undertake the mammoth task of painting more than 300 feet of Victorian riverside railings.

This is being done in time for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Beacons event on 2 June, where they will be used as a backdrop.

They once fenced in the former Royal Gunpowder Magazines and garrison. The only remaining magazine houses Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre, which will be open on 2 June from 10am till 3.30pm. When work was carried out to restore the Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) restorers found the clock face was originally blue and only became black during the war.

The cost of this restoration was £79.9m. The forum are painting the railings blue, linking the Elizabeth Tower with our Jubilee event for free for everyone to enjoy when strolling along the riverfront.

Afterwards you can sit on one of the five riverside benches the forum arranged to be installed.

Please come along and help with 'Final Push' on Saturday 14 May. If we get enough painters they will be completed. Contact [email protected]
