Roundabout will improve accident blackspot as council changes mind and recognises safety concerns
THURROCK Council has confirmed it has authorised work, currently underway, to create a roundabout at what has become an accident blackspot.
Over recent years Thurrock Nub News has reported, with some regularity, on crashes at the junction on Marshfoot Road between Tilbury and Grays where it links with the A1089 (Tilbury docks approach road) slip roads.
During the last five years there have been 15 'serious' collisions at the junction which led to 23 people being injured, a significant number of incidents where there has not been a recorded emergency services respose.
Despite the number of crashes which have often involved multiple vehicles - and a suggestion from Essex Police that there were some alignment and signage issues - Thurrock Council has previously rebutted any suggestion that the junction is problematical.
However, it now appears to have had a change of heart.
A statement says: "These works are taking place to create a roundabout at the A1089 off-slip road.
"The works have been funded by an award from the Department for Transport's Safer Roads Funding scheme to address safety concerns on this slip-road."
