A BOROUGH school will be celebrating cultural diversity within its community next week.

Culture Week at Thames Park Secondary School in Grays starts on Monday (31 March) and aims to celebrate the diverse cultures that exist within the school community and promote the values of solidarity and caring for others.

Cultural week serves as an opportunity for our students to explore and appreciate the rich tapestry of cultures represented at our school. It encourages them to embrace diversity, build connections, and develop a sense of belonging and respect for one another.

Support manager Julie Spurgeon says: "Throughout the week, students will participate in various activities that highlight different aspects of different cultures, including Paella Cooking and Bhangra Dancing.

"We have a special menu, offering different foods from around the world each day. On Thursday (3 April), students are invited to wear cultural dress, this could be a national dress or any other type of formal wear.

"Also, during the day students will enjoy a cultural carnival atmosphere with music and dance. Students are also invited to bring in food that represents their culture that they would be happy to share with their peers.

"In the afternoon, students will enjoy cultural performances. They will enjoy a celebration of music, dance, poetry, and stories of cultural experiences. We believe that by immersing themselves in these experiences, students will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the cultural heritage of their peers.

"At Thames Park Secondary School, we strongly believe in fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment. Cultural week aligns with our commitment to promoting caring for others by providing all students with an equal opportunity to celebrate their own culture and learn about others. It encourages dialogue, empathy, and understanding, fostering a sense of unity that transcends cultural differences.

"We also emphasise the importance of solidarity in creating a harmonious and respectful school community.

"Cultural week provides an opportunity for students to take ownership of their learning and interactions, as this week is organised by both our staff and students.  Together, let us celebrate the richness and beauty of our diverse cultures, fostering an inclusive and respectful environment for all."
