Special moments on the Thames as tribute is paid to volunteers who look after visiting seafarers

By Nub News Reporter   21st Dec 2025

A SEASONAL annual event took place recently at the Port of Tilbury where tribute was paid to the volunteers who keep the QVSR London Tilbury Seafarers Centre running through the year to support crews on vessels that use the port and neighbouring DP World London Gateway.

The charity, which has expanded from its origins in Tilbury to other ports across the country, looks after active seafarers and supports their health and wellbeing whilst they are in port.

After spending many months at sea the centres provide a place where seafarers can take time away from the ship and relax in more homely and comfortable surroundings.

The centre at Tilbury recently welcomed the Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Sue Shinnick, and Thurrock MP Jen Craft as well as two special guests from the sea – Capt Joshi and 2nd Officer Edward of the Eva Bristol.

The captain offered heartfelt thanks for the Seafarers Centre and Christmas gifts before joining in singing "We Three Kings" with Jules Parker from DP World and Deputy Mayor, Cllr Steve Liddiard, who was also celebrating his birthday!

Mary Henderson and Gordon Hayers were recognised for their service

Tribute was paid to two volunteers, Mary Henderson and Gordon Hayers, for their countless hours of support to Centre Manager Julie Hobby in running the Seafarers Centre.

Julie said: "To our pianist, our Readers, our Chaplaincy Team and everyone who came along – thank you, your presence and support is much appreciated."

The Mission's rest centre also recently received an unusual gift from the Port of London Authority – that is likely to be seen all over the world.

The authority has presented the centre with a newly spruced-up traditional red phone booth, saying: "We hope international seafarers having a short break ashore in Tilbury will enjoy posing for photographs with the classic London icon, to show their loved ones they have safely arrived into the Port of London."

The gift came with a special message: "We are grateful to all of those working through the Christmas and New Year period, including the team at the PLA, at the terminals across the Port, and seafarers coming and going. It is their dedication and commitment that keeps trade safely flowing 24/7."
