STUDENTS at Thames Park Secondary School in Grays played host to a morning of events as Baroness Smith of Basildon arrived, along with Cllr James Halden, Mayor of Thurrock, to officially open the new buildings and school site.

They were joined by representatives from the Department for Education, Thurrock Council, Osborne Co-operative Academy Trust as well as Bowmer & Kirkland, the school's contractors.

The morning began with pupils leading guests on the tours of the state-of the art facility on Wood View. They visited a wide range of lessons, showcasing the use of digital technologies that the school is becoming renowned for. From art to science, music to sports, guests were impressed

The whole school community was then enthralled by an opening ceremony designed and led by the pupils. A full-hearted Haka set the scene for Lucas Allright and Fadeelah Jokosanya to talk about their journey as founding pupils. Eduard Chirac played an inspiring intermezzo on the violin. Headteacher Kam Bains thanked the guests who had worked tirelessly over the years and been part of the Thames Park story. This was followed by a song and dance from Matilda performed by year eight pupils.

Baroness Angela Smith gave an inspirational speech about the school's place in the co-operative movement and the impact young people in this school will have on the future, stating: "Thames Park is clearly a place where its pupils are flourishing". A duet soulful rendition of 'Opportunity', rounded off the performances.
