MEMBERS of Thurrock Royal British Legion are to go ahead with their centenary dinner dance this evening (Friday, 9 September)

Branch president Rod Oakley told Nub News the branch had considered cancelling the event as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth yesterday, but in the end, after consulting with RBL head office which said protocol in such circumstances said: "Most fundraising activity and any scheduled mass events will continue as planned. "

Mr Oakley added: "We also felt that the late Queen would want us to carry on. She has been an inspiration to the armed forces and this evening we will raise a glass to her and toast our new King.

"We will be raising money for the Poppy Appeal as part of our fundraising activity, and we have nearly 200 people attending. It promises to be a memorable if poignant, evening."
