A FREE six-week physical activity game has kicked off across East Thurrock, with more than 2,000 residents already registered to play on the first day.

Beat the Street East Thurrock is taking place until Wednesday, 4 November across East Tilbury, Stanford-le-Hope, Horndon on the Hill, and Corringham.

Players of all ages and abilities are invited to take part. Just use the app or pick up a card, register it to a team and then find your nearest Beat Box on the game map at https://beatthestreet.me/easternthurrock/ Tap the Beat Box and then walk, cycle, run, scoot or wheel to the next one to score points. Then keep going!

There are prizes for the teams that travel the furthest, with vouchers on offer. There is also a leaderboard for individuals, as well as a total points leaderboard, and an average leaderboard, to give teams of all sizes the chance to win prizes.

Special launch events were held at East Tilbury Primary School and Hardie Park Cafe, where pupils were able to find out a little bit more about the game before trying the Beat Boxes out for themselves and completing some fun activities.

Beat the Street was created by GP Dr William Bird who is a physical activity expert and the chair of Active Essex. The game encourages people to exercise while exploring their local areas, and has been played by more than two million people in over 200 locations across the UK, including recently in Tilbury and Chadwell St Mary.

The game not only has a significant impact on increasing low levels of physical activity amongst adults and children, but also helps reduce congestion, improves air quality, and helps families spend time in green spaces together.

Beat the Street Eastern Thurrock is being delivered by Intelligent Health in partnership with, and funded by, Thurrock Council, Active Essex and the National Lottery via Sport England.

Cllr Willoughby said: "Well done to everyone who has got involved so far and contributed to a fantastic first day total! It was a pleasure to pay a visit to East Tilbury Primary School, meet some of their pupils and test out the Beat Boxes on our walk to Gobions Park.

"We're keen to get as many people as possible involved, and with the game running for six weeks, it's not too late to get registered and start climbing the leaderboard."
