Thurrock community leader nominated for National Diversity Award
By Cross Keys Community Fund 29th Mar 2026
A THURROCK man has been nominated for a prestigious National Diversity Award 2026 in the Positive Role Model Award category, recognising his work supporting people of all ages through community engagement, mental health support and creative initiatives.
David Barton, founder of Get Started Art, has been recognised for his impact both locally and internationally, using art to support vulnerable and neurodiverse children while also engaging older people living with dementia and Alzheimer's.
The initiative, which began in Thurrock, has grown into a national and now international project focused on improving wellbeing, reducing isolation and bringing communities together through creativity.
Alongside this, David has supported a range of community initiatives across Thurrock and Essex, helping to establish funding programmes, support local charities and create opportunities for volunteers to engage with vulnerable groups.
The National Diversity Awards, now in their 15th year, recognise individuals making a significant contribution to equality, diversity and inclusion across the UK. The awards have been described as "a powerful platform to give public recognition to those who are changing other people's lives for the better".
Previous recipients include celebrities Katie Piper and Jameela Jamil.
Winners will be announced at a ceremony at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral in September 2026.
