Thurrock remembered: Local service marked 80th anniversay of liberation of Auschwitz
LOCAL civic dignitaries, including borough mayor Cllr Kairen Raper joined residents and schoolchildren at a service marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp in Poland.
German Nazis murdered approximately 1.1 million people in Auschwitz, mostly Jews, but also Poles, the Roma, Soviet prisoners of war and people of other nationalities.
It has become tradition for Grays to host its memorial service at the Herbert E. Brooks Memorial Rest in Grays, where a permanent Holocaust memorial is located.
The multi-faith service took place today (Monday, 27 January) as well as Cllr Raper, Cllrs Valerie Morris-Cook (cabinet member for the community partnerships) and Qaisar Abbas (shadow cabinet member for the community partnerships) took part.
There were contributions from children from Grays Convent School, Little Thurrock Primary, William Edwards School and Woodside Academy.
Members of Thurrock Community Safety Partnership and local police officers also attended.
The garden in Grays, established in 1933, was created in memory of Herbert E Brooks - a senior figure in the cement industry, a public servant in Thurrock and Essex and a local historian.
