TRIBUTE has been paid to a much-loved member of a Thurrock school community who has passed away.

St Clere's School in Stanford-le-Hope has announced the death of Derek Fawbert who passed away last week after a short illness.

Mr Fawbert started working for St Clere's School in 1979 and was head of science for many years.

Headteacher Mrs Ashlie Hughes said: "In his retirement, we were very fortunate to have him working here as a governor and he was often in the school interviewing pupils about their learning.

"Derek was a highly respected member of staff and governors who will be greatly missed.

"He was also very well thought of by pupils and parents so I am sure there will be many ex-students very upset by this sad news."

Following his retirement in 2007 after 28 years at the school he became a governor and among his many contributions to school life he helped organise school reunions for students and staff.
